Over the past week, suspense has been building up for the announcement to the new Apple iPad, a piece of technology that has been theororiezed about for several years. Today, Apple proved that theory true, as its long-awaited Tablet Announcement has finally arrived!

Apple iPad

Before I analyze the features of the iPad, let’s look at the purpose of it. The Apple iPad is meant to bridge the gap between MacBook and iPhone. It combines the touchscreen and interface of the iPhone with the reliance and compatibility of the MacBook. Clearly, the iPad is a device of extreme reliability and excellence.

The iPad is about half and inch thick and weighs about one and a half pounds, and has a 9.7 inch display. Users can change the home screen background and according to Steve Jobs, it’ll “be the best browsing experience you’ve ever had.” Users can also change the orientation of the iPad to any position they want and manipulate the device with their fingers.

The iPad comes built in with a splendid scaled-up version of the iPhone keyboard, except much easier to type on. The tablet also has iTunes built into it, and of course, a calendar, address book, Google Maps app.

The built-in email client is pretty awesome, with two panes.

Although viewing widescreen movies and television is somewhat awkward, given the dimensions of the iPad, it still offers a pretty nice experience.

Back to hardware; the tablet offers 16, 32, or 64 GB of storage, a WiFi card, accelerometer, compass, speaker, and microphone. The battery life on this device is remarkable: 10 hours!

To top that off, it’s been proven to be able to go to standby mode for an entire month! All iPhone apps will also be compatible on the iPad. One of their newest apps is called iBook, which offers a very appealing interface for users to read their favorite e-books. They can even be read in full color, and each book is organized on a virtual wooden bookshelf.

An updated version of iWork also contributes the experience of the tablet, as it can now be utilized by the business class to create documents, spreadsheets, and presentations.

Finally, pricing and shipping; the 16 GB model starts at $499, the 32 GB model starts at $599, and the 64 GB model starts at $699. For 3G, just add $130 to each price. Regular WiFi models will be shipped in 60 days, while 3G models will be shipped in 90 days.

Overall, Apple has done it again with their latest invention; they’ve produced a device of the utmost elegance, simplicity, and compatibility. However, the performance of this device remains to be seen. For example, Apple claims that they’ve only had two weeks to work on this, and as a result, that is supposed to explain the slight complications that surfaced during the app demonstrations. I think it is safe to say that we can all  look forward to eventually using tablets similar to these in the near future.
